36 THE GARDEN The Tower’s garden is a place where the city seems to dissolve into the countryside. Among olive trees, cypresses and pergolas, the atmosphere is the quiet one of the Tuscan hills. Despite its proximity to Florence, this corner of nature retains a surprisingly rural character, with the presence of numerous wild animals: roe deer, badgers, foxes, pheasants, birds of prey, and many species of small birds. At times they can even be glimpsed from the villa — fleeting appearances that remind us how deeply the Tower still belongs to the landscape of the hills. WHERE THE CITY MEETS THE COUNTRYSIDE
