During WW2 the “masseria” (a traditional farmhouse) housed the headquarters of the American troops and here, in a tent among the olive trees, the armistice of Cassibile was signed. It sanctioned the surrender of Italy to the allied troops. It was September 3, 1943. In the Italian garden of the property, owner Lucia Pascarelli had a replica of the memorial stone placed. The original which was in the precise site of the signing had been stolen. The baglio is still there, austere and fortified, surrounded by a moat once filled with water. It has not been renovated like various other agricultural environments but remains to bear witness to the authenticity of the place (as well as remembering the events that changed Italian history). Until recently it was the summer home of the owner family and some of the farm workers remained to maintain the garden and resort buildings. There are two swimming pools. One is actually a bio pond (right)- the area being subject to restrictions - while the second larger one is located in the area of the beautiful orangery, a large glass edifice where lunch is served and events hosted. On the side of this green area stands the large vegetable garden, where chef Vincenzo Di Falco selects herbs for the preparation of his dishes. The restaurant La Zaituna offers authentic Sicilian cuisine with truly zero km ingredients (in part taken from the adjacent vegetable garden). On the menu we find two set menus of two and three courses. ma s s e r i a Donna Coraly Siracusa 232
